The technique: tiny sections of fabric are pinched and tied with thread, resist the dye, then untied to reveal the pattern underneath. A single dupatta can take days — sometimes weeks — of tying, one knot at a time, before a single drop of dye ever touches the cloth. Bandhani is rooted in Gujarat and Rajasthan, practiced for centuries and most famously carried forward by the Khatri community. The name itself comes from "bandhan" — to tie.
